The Scrumpling
[gifted] A review of a charmingly rustic vintage caravan, hidden in the heart of cider country.
“The Scrumpling, tucked beneath the trees in a Somerset woodland, is a stylishly renovated vintage caravan. The name is a nod to the site’s West Country location - an old word for a small, ‘ill-shaped’ apple - the kind of windfall fruits that would have gone into scrumpy in years gone by, having been gleaned from orchards and hedgerows.”
The Scrumpling is the most enchanting, beautiful off-grid caravan that has been lovingly restored by journalist and writer Rhiannon Batten. The caravan offers the most beautiful living space, whilst the kitchen is housed in a summer house and bathroom in a nearby stone outhouse.
It is the perfect romantic getaway, completely on its own and tucked in the most gorgeous glade under tall mature trees. However, it isn’t as quiet as you might expect, as between the owls hooting, birds chirping and small mammals rustling, it’s quite the hive of activity!
The interiors are simple and stylish, a gorgeous green velvet sofa to sit on whilst you enjoy Rhiannon’s homemade apple crumble cookies with a cup of tea and a huge comfy double bed to lie in and watch the trees sway in the wind. It is the most relaxing place I have ever stayed.
Near The Scrumpling is the charming village of Mells, where the Walled Garden is well worth a visit, for flowers and their delicious wood fired pizzas. Opposite the Walled Garden is The Talbot, an old village inn dating back to 1480, with swallows nesting in the eves, wood fires burning and local draught Somerset cider.
Thank you Rhiannon for inviting us to discover this ‘scrumptious’ caravan, we will definitely return.
