In a moment of pure extravagance and the fact the I didn’t think my husband and I had had a proper conversation or spent any time with each other for ages, I booked a night for us away in Totnes for our wedding anniversary.
I’d read about The Bull Inn and followed their account on Instagram, an organic inn with sumptuous rooms. Coupled with the fact that Totnes was easily to reach by train, thus reducing the need to drive miles too, made it an ideal destination. Plus we have never visited before so it was somewhere new to discover.

The trains ran like clockwork, not using trains very often they hold a nostalgic place in my heart. I loved the journey between Exeter and Newton Abbot in particular, where the track hugs the sandstone cliffs past the Dawlish and Teignmouth coast.
The Bull Inn, was everything I’d hoped it would be, and the staff were so friendly, all of them genuinely lovely from the minute we walked through the door. Also incredibly knowledgeable about the food, ingredients and provenance of the dishes too. And the food, oh my goodness, absolutely delicious, we had very full bellies!

We enjoyed an evening meal, as well as breakfast at The Bull, and drank local cider and wild nettle gimlet’s on the sunny pavement out front, it was absolutely wonderful.

Totnes has the reputation of being very green and alternative, and it certainly had more independent shops than any town I’ve seen in a long time, with lots of cafes, crystal shops, record and bookshops too. It was charming and I highly recommend twenty four hours in Totnes if you get the opportunity.
